Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support her family through work as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth went to school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. But she quit school after just two years in order to pursue an acting career. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles: in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then, after a time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home and quit the job she was working in. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
